چکیده

Previous studies in the Gulf of Gdańsk discussed the responses of selected enzymatic biomarkers to the contaminant gradient in fish and mussels. In the present study, flounder muscle and liver tissues were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB congeners: 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153 and 180), organochlorine pesticides (HCHs, HCB and DDTs), and trace metals (Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Hg, Cr). An attempt was made to identify the relationship between the measured enzymatic biomarker responses (cholinesterases, malic enzyme, isocitrate dehydrogenase, glutathione S-transferase) and contaminant concentrations in selected flounder tissues. The observed differences in enzymatic biomarker levels suggest that chronic exposure to low-concentration mixtures of contaminants may be occurring in the studied area. However, no conclusive evidence was found of a clear link between the biomarker responses and contaminant concentrations in flounder tissues.

Liver histopathology in Baltic flounder (Platichthys flesus) as indicator of biological effects of contaminants.

Results are presented of a study on liver histopathology in Baltic flounder (Platichthys flesus) carried out in 2001 and 2002 in four coastal sampling areas of the Baltic Sea: Kvädöfjärden (Swedish east coast, reference area), Klaipeda-Butinge (Lithuanian coast), Gulf of Gdansk (Polish coast), and Wismar Bay (German coast) within the framework of the EU-funded BEEP project. Liver lesions were d...

Measurements of biomarker levels in flounder (Platichthys flesus) and blue mussel (Mytilus trossulus) from the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic).

In the framework of the EU funded BEEP project a set of biomarkers, gross morphometric indices and tissue concentrations of selected organic pollutants were measured in flounder (Platichthys flesus) and mussels (Mytilus trossulus) collected twice a year (April and October) from three sites in the inner Gulf of Gdańsk between autumn 2001 and spring 2003. In flounder, seasonal differences in most...

Indices for the assessment of environmental pollution of the Baltic Sea coasts: integrated assessment of a multi-biomarker approach.

Two mathematical methods to assess the "health status" of flounder (Platichthys flesus), eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) and blue mussel (Mytilus spp.) populations of the Baltic Sea were applied on selected biomarker data collected during the EU project "BEEP" (Biological Effects of Environmental Pollution on Marine Coastal Ecosystems). The Bioeffect Assessment Index (BAI) and the Integrated Biomar...

Experimental evidence of predation by juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus, on a shallow water meiobenthic community.

In the northern Baltic Sea juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus, occur in high abundances on shallow sandy bottoms in late summer and autumn. They feed mainly on meiofauna and the ontogenetic switch to macrofaunal sized food occurs at a larger size here than in other areas, exemplifying the high relative importance of meiofauna. Consequently, juvenile P. flesus in the Baltic feed for a longer ...

Skln ulcer disease of flounder Platichthys flesus (L.) was investigated a t 7 sampling sites in the northern Baltic Sea, SW Finland, dunng 1987-1989. Disease prevalences ranged from 1 8 to 11.1 % in different areas. A significant correlation was established between sex, fish length and disease prevalence. h4ales were more affected (10 7%) than females (3.1%) and larger flsh showed higher diseas...
